В 1965 году теплоход получил название в честь Ивана Семёновича Рачкова (1899-1942) — потомственного речника, участника Сталинградской битвы, капитана парохода «Иосиф Сталин», с которым работал до 2004 года.
В 2004 году модернизирован по проекту 26-37/311.
В 2007 году на теплоходе был снят фильм «День выборов».
14 ноября 2011 года у причала Северного речного вокзала Москвы на теплоходе произошёл крупный пожар, в результате которого выгорели практически все внутренние помещения. В процессе тушения пожара из-за большого объёма поданной воды теплоход затонул и лег кормой на грунт. В декабре 2011 года была проведена герметизация корпуса и откачка воды, судно отбуксировано к грузовому причалу Северного речного порта.
8 ноября 2012 года отправлено в Череповец на разделку
