В течение рокового 7-часового боя в Яванском море 27 февраля 1942 года "Java" в 23.32 получил попадание единственной японской торпеды из 8-торпедного залпа японского крейсера "Nachi", произведенного с дистанции около 40 кабельтовых. Затонул после 20-минутной агонии в результате взрыва боезапаса приблизительно в 35 милях к С-3 от о. Бавеан. Вместе с кораблем погиб почти весь экипаж.
