18.07.1915 торпедирован австрийской подводной лодкой U-4. Крейсер быстро сманеврировал, пытаясь уклониться от выпущенных по нему торпед. Первая из них прошла мимо, а вторая взорвалась в поперечной угольной яме в центре корабля. Удар оказался слишком серьезным. Объемистые машинные и котельные отделения быстро наполнились водой, и спустя всего несколько минут крейсер затонул на практически ровном киле. 53 человека погибли вместе с ним, 525 удалось спасти.
