18 ноября 2002 во время шторма в районе юго-западного побережья Сахалина рыболовное судно получило опасный крен. Моряки оставили судно, перебравшись в два спасательных плота. Судно "Комсомолец Приморья" обнаружило один из плотов с девятью членами экипажа. Во время пересадки на судно один из моряков упал в воду и утонул. Позднее рыболовное судно "Чернобыль" обнаружило ещё одного моряка, который вскоре умер от переохлаждения. Ещё семь членов экипажа пропали без вести.
