Охотские лихтеры никогда не были сухогрузами. Основное их назначение - перевозка и посол рыбы (в основном сельди) из районов лова на береговые рыбозаводы. Для загрузки рыбой в море, применялся рыбонасос с приводом от дизеля, устанавленный в небольшой надстройке в цетнре судна, между трюмами.
