Морской транспорт вооружений "Генерал Рябиков" вступил в состав ВМФ 6.03.1979 года на основании приказа №081 командующего КЧФ. Эта дата является Днем Рождения корабля. Организационно входит в состав 205 отряда судов обеспечения КЧФ. Пункт постоянного базирования — Севастополь.
В августе 2008 года транспорт участвовал в операции по принуждению Грузии к миру.
В июле 2010 года участник парада по случаю Дня ВМФ России.
В 2011 года состоялись последние выходы транспорта в море. Далее он был выведен в резерв.
В 2014 году участник операции по возвращению Крыма в состав РФ.
