U-48 стала самой результативной подводной лодкой во Второй мировой войне: совершила 12 боевых походов, проведя в море 325 дней; потопила 51 судно общим тоннажем 306 875 брт. С июля 1941 года выведена из состава боевых флотилий и использовалась в качестве учебной. Затоплена 3 мая 1945 года близ Нойштадта в рамках операции «Регенбоген».
