Земснаряд назван в честь Михаила Львовича Лисовского (1844–1900) — выдающегося русского инженера путей сообщения. Первым номинальным владельцем судна был William Brown, управляющий верфи William Simons & Co. Ltd. (Renfrew), а портом приписки значился Глазго. Предназначался для работы на Чёрном море в порту Николаев, куда и убыл из Гринока 11.04.1901
