Названа в честь одной из предыдущих яхт, которыми владел С.А.Строганов — «Заря». Водоизмещение яхты-шхуны составляло 1160 тонн, длина 62,5 м (одна из самых больших яхт, числившихся в С.-Пб Императорском яхт-клубе), мощность — 165 номинальных сил. На яхте состоял обширный штат: командир(он же владелец), 3 его помощника, 2 квартирмейстера, 31 матрос, четыре машиниста, несколько кочегаров, содержатель имущества и кок. В августе 1914 г. «Зарю» записали в Военно-Морской флот.
