В результате технического содружества ЦНИИ Лесосплава и Костромского судомеханического завода в 1975 г. был спущен на воду опытный образец трехсотсильного буксира. Производственные испытания были начаты осенью того же года на Каме. Летом 1976 г. они завершились, после чего было принято решение о серийной постройке судов проекта ЛС-56А.
