В 1975 году судно названо в честь Героя Советского Союза Сергея Петровича Даньщина.
При переименовании из-за ошибки в приказе МРФ, вызванной разночтением фамилии в документах, судно на протяжении 6 лет, до 1981 года, работало с неверным названием, после чего получило правильное наименование.
Исключено из РРР до 2012 г.
