Раньше был приписан к Московскому судостроительному и судоремонтному заводу (МССЗ), тогда ещё была целая "флотилия" подобных сухогрузов: Елец, Стерлитамак, Сухиничи и.т.д. Возглавлял Ряжск в 70-е годы капитан Василий Крошенинников
