Судно названо в честь Павла Молчанова, русского и советского метеоролога, изобретателя и испытателя первого в мире радиозонда.
С 26 января 1983 г. по 7 сентября 1991 г. судно занималось научными исследованиями в полярных широтах, совершив 34 похода под советским флагом, включая 3 глобальные гидрологические экспедиции под управлением Мурманского гидрометцентра. С 1997 по 2011 сдавалось в аренду для совершения арктических и антарктических круизов.
В 2001 году прошло модернизацию.
