Корабль назван в честь Свияжска — города-крепости, построенного Иваном Грозным в 1551 году как база для осады Казани, ныне село в Зеленодольском районе Татарстана.
Ночью 7.10.2015 корабль впервые в истории ВМФ России осуществил пуски КР РК ”Калибр-НК” по инфраструктуре боевиков ”ИГИЛ”.
