17 января 1942 года у мыса Черный в юго-восточной части Баренцева моря, в 20 милях от Мурманского берега торпедирован германской ПЛ U‑454. Один человек погиб, экипаж и капитан В. М. Маевский на шлюпках в 20‑градусный мороз добрались до берега у становища Варзино.
