Модернизирован в 1968 году на ССЗ им. 61 коммунара по проекту 530А. Установлены захваты для подъёма подводных лодок.
Главные технические характеристики судна: полное водоизмещение — около 7.000 тонн, длина — 129,5, ширина — 18,9 метра. Максимальная осадка — 6,4 метра. Мощность дизель-электрической установки — до 8000 л.с. Максимальный ход — 16,5 узла. Дальность плавания ходом в 14 узлов — 8.000 миль при автономности 45 суток. Экипаж — 270 человек.
Основным назначением корабля являлось спасение экипажей и подъем аварийных подводных лодок, включая полностью затопленные, подъемной массой до 800т с глубины до 300м.
Для спасательных работ и судоподъёма, на судне имелся 100-тонный кран, и две грузовые стрелы на 60 и 10 тонн.
