Назван в честь Егора Ивановича Заонегина — капитана парохода "Металлист" , погибшего на Великой Отечественной войне, во время эвакуации. В ночь с 12 на 13 ноября 1941 г. караван судов вмерз в лед Заонежского залива в районе Мегострова и захвачен частями финской армии.
