За время службы совершил 15 дальних походов, в период с 1956 по 1964 совершил 5 международных визитов (Албания, Болгария, Югославия). Участвовал в боевой поддержке вооружённым силам Египта (1967-1968 гг.) и вооружённым силам Сирии (1970 г.).
В 1979 году на Севастопольском морском заводе началась модернизация по проекту 68А, окончившаяся в 1986 году.
В 1998 г. исключён из состава флота. До 2001 года находился на отстое в Севастополе, в августе 2001 года переведён в Новороссийск и 28.07.2002 г. открыт как корабль-музей.
