Теплоход назван в честь Григория Ивановича Бугрова, который многие годы возглавлял Астраханский эксплуатационный участок пароходства Волготанкер.
Около 14:20 московского времени 13 октября 2011 года в северной части Каспийского моря танкер Григорий Бугров с грузом 6000 тонн мазута столкнулся с затопленной мишенью, не нанесенной на карту, получил пробоину по левому борту в районе машинного отделения, лег на левый борт и затонул предположительно, в координатах 44 28N 48 12E (37 миль СВ от острова Чечень), на глубине 8 метров. Судно лежало на грунте с креном 28 градусов, часть корпуса при этом выступала из воды. Экипаж 14 человек был снят и не пострадал, были проведены аварийно-спасательные работы.
К 24 октября танкер Григорий Бугров удалось поднять, загерметизировав 5 пробоин. Судно поставили на ровный киль, выгрузили груз 6000 тонн мазута, и 27 октября танкер был приведен на буксире в Астрахань. Мишенью оказалось судно длиной около 50 метров, лежащее на грунте на ровном киле в точке 44 29N 48 12E.
